Waiting For My Name is an interactive exhibition built around the surviving photographs of Fisher Ross, a little-known gay photographer whose life remains largely undocumented. Only a small body of his work survives, offering a rare glimpse into San Francisco's Castro district in the late 1970s—a place and moment that has become legendary in gay cultural memory. Nearly all of the artist’s models remain unidentified, making the images as mysterious as they are compelling.

The survival of these photographs is itself extraordinary. Around 1979–80, Ross sent an extensive portfolio of his work to After Dark magazine editor Bill Como for safekeeping. Following Como's death in 1989, the collection remained forgotten in an attic for more than three decades before being rediscovered in 2023. Had it not survived this unlikely journey, nearly all evidence of Ross's artistic legacy might have vanished. Tragically, Ross's own personal archive is believed to have been lost or destroyed, leaving these photographs as one of the few remaining traces of his life and work.

This exhibition invites viewers to become active participants in preserving this history. Visitors are encouraged to share any information they may have about Ross or the men depicted in the photographs, most of whom remain unnamed. Each image is currently identified only by a number. As subjects are recognized, those numbers will be replaced by names, restoring identity to men who have long remained anonymous.

At its core, Waiting For My Name is about memory, legacy, and the power of naming. It highlights how easily personal histories, artistic achievements, and entire communities can disappear when stories go untold. By recovering names and identities, the exhibition seeks to secure these photographs a lasting place within the broader history of gay life and culture. In doing so, it demonstrates that preserving the past is not a passive act but a collective one—made possible through participation, remembrance, and recognition.

The Fisher Ross Archive is offering framed digital prints of each exhibition photograph in a limited edition of 15. Priced at $150 each, 50% of proceeds will be donated to the Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library in honor of Pride Month.
